Amrita Sher Gil, also said to be India's Farida Kahlo, Indian's most expensive woman painter, her Village Scene painting sold for 69 million (Indian) Rupees in 2006. She said, I can only paint in India. Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse, Braque... India belongs only to me.


Amrita Sher Gil was one of the most eminent woman painters of 20th century of India, was born on Jan 30, 1913 in Hungary to a Punjabi Jat Sikh father and Hungarian Jewish mother. She died at age 28, with the reason for her death never ascertained. Her art was strongly influenced by the Bengal School of Painting.
