Diabetes is an condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. We get glucose from starchy foods in our diet such as pasta, bread an cakes etc.
Main symptoms are increased thirst, passing urine more often than usual, extreme tiredness and lethargy and blurred vision
Impact of diabetes, if not controlled properly, can lead, to longer terms, to a number of health complications including increased risk of stroke and heart disease, damage to the retina which could lead to blindness, poor kidney function, nerve damage etc.
Preventable risk factors include being overweight, quit alcohol and smoking, poor diet.
Non preventable risk factors are ethnic background like if your are from a South Asian or African Caribbean background and/or age is 65+ you may have a greater risk of developing diabetes.
Maintain healthy wight, eat a healthy balanced diet that is low in fat, salt and sugar and get active for 30 minutes daily.
Pre-diabetes is almost always a precursor to the development of type 2 diabetes. The good news is that cases of pre-diabetes that are identified early on can be reserved, preventing them from progressing into full-blown type 2 diabetes.
