D. J. Government Science College Karachi in 1893

DJ College was named after the Sindhi philanthropist Diwan Dayaram Jethmal, whose two family members contributed towards its cost. The total cost was 186,514 but govt. spent 97,193 where as 89,321 where contributed by the public.


The amount of money was spent was considered as handsome of that time i.e. in late 1880s and considerable money spent on the interior of the college; the floors comprised mosaic tiles imported from Belgium and the eight-foot wide main staircase was fitted with ornamental cast-iron work from McFarlane & Company of Glasgow.


The building designed by James Strachan and considered this architect's greatest achievement, the college was built between 1887 and 1893. The building was constructed in the neoclassical, or Italian architectural style.

Now, it is considered as one of the major talent exposing colleges of Karachi where merit for admission is always higher.
