What is Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)?

LNG is natural gas (methane) chilled to −162 °C (−260 °F) so that it becomes a liquid. Once it has been liquefied, the methane takes up much less space. Because LNG occupies about 1/600 the space of methane in its gaseous form it can be exported in purpose-built tanker ships.

It is odorless, colorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive. The liquefaction process involves removal of certain components, such as dust, acid gases, helium, water, and heavy hydrocarbons. Maximum transport pressure is set at around 25 kPa (4 psi).

LNG production is expected to hit 10% of the global crude production by 2020.
