Mautana custom or tradition

Mautana is the death compensation by killer to victim's family or heirs. _Mautana _ payment is due if someone kills a person, the entire community will support the victim's family by making the suspect's family pay the compensation. It is used to put the dead body on the doorstep of the accused or suspect and demand for money, grains and/or other resources. The amount depends upon the social status of the victim and the suspect/accused. This is traditional custom of murder compensation in Indian state Rajhastan and nearby areas of the region.


Typically known as Bhil tribal tradition is adopted by various other communities in the region with time. But now, middlemen, even sarpanchs and panchs, vie for a cut of the compensation when the families or communities of the victims and the suspects reach a deal. It supports moneylenders as the compensation amount is often huge and accused borrow from them. The money range is between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,00,000.
