Seven grads are used in consumer goods, and sometimes the number and log can be found on the product. Grades are categorized under Safer Plastics and Plastics to Avoid.
Safer Plastics:
1-Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)
Used in containers and is safe for a single use in disposable soft drink and water bottles.
2-High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
Often found in milk jugs and shampoo bottles.
4-Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)
Cling wrap, grocery bags and sandwich bangs.
5-Polypropylene (PP)
Used in syrup bottles, yogurt cups and diapers.
Plastics to Avoid
3-Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Used to soften plastic so it can be used for materials such as pipes.
6-Polystyrene (PSA, and non-extruded)
Used in takeout containers, cups and silverware.
7-Polycarbonate (PC):
May contain BPA, and has been used for baby bottles, 5-gallon water bottles, water-cooler bottles and epoxy lining of tin food cans.
