Shore, coast, beach, bay & gulf difference

Shore, coast, beach and bay are the 4 terms are regularly used with the sea and ocean. What do they mean? Following is the answer.

Shore or Seashore

Any land along the sea or ocean is called shore or seashore. This may include high mountains, the forest or a desert. No matter what kind of land it is.

Coast

The land adjacent to or along with the sea. The land attached to the sea is considered as coast even miles away.

Beach

The term beach can be used with ocean, sea, large river, lake etc.

Beach is an expanse of sand or pebbles along a shore or the area around a shore washed by the tide or waves.

Bay

Bay is the body of water forming an indentation of the shoreline, much smaller as compared to a gulf. Bay is a geographical shape of waters.

Gulf

Gulf is a portion of an ocean or sea partly enclosed by land, usually longer enough e.g. the Gulf of Bothnia, the Persian Gulf.
